SLEEPING DOGS UK’S “BEST-SELLING NEW IP OF 2012”

-- Award-winning open world title continues to support game with DLC in 2013 --

LONDON – (01, February, 2013) – Square Enix London Studios, a part of Square Enix Europe, today announced that its award-winning undercover cop drama SLEEPING DOGS™ has become the UK’s best-selling new videogame IP of 2012 at retail, according to figures recently released by Chart Track. Offering an incredible open world adventure, players have delved into the action on Hong Kong Island in their millions, exploring the extensive story-driven campaign and game-extending downloadable content.

“We felt we had a hit on our hands in SLEEPING DOGS and to be the UK’s best-selling new IP of 2012 is a fantastic achievement,” said Lee Singleton, General Manager, Square Enix London Studios. “Our goal was to set new benchmarks in the open world genre with best-in-class combat, driving and story-telling, and hopefully gamers feel that we’ve done that with SLEEPING DOGS. We will continue to do that in 2013 with the downloadable content still planned for release.”

SLEEPING DOGS launched with a commitment to six months of add-on content and over the coming months the campaign continues with a collection of downloadable packs offering gameplay to suit every taste. During the first three months of 2013, players can look forward to:

Hell-bent on cleansing the city of its evils, they cannot be negotiated with as they pursue a path to their righteous salvation. Seize the streets back from the 18K with a series of upgrades and add-ons available on completion of each mission, building into the ultimate supercar available both in missions and in the open world.

Out from today, Nightmare in North Point is the first story-extending add-on for Square Enix London Studios’ and United Front Games’ undercover cop drama, Sleeping Dogs. Taking an unusual twist on the traditional open world gameplay, Wei Shen is thrown into a world of Hong Kong Horror
when the ghosts of Triads past rise from Hell, bent on taking over the city and installing ‘Smiley Cat’ as the new Dragon Head. Of course, Face doesn’t mean a thing when the minions of hell roam the streets, and Wei must seek out the strongest of Chinese magic to grant him the power to defeat the
dead and send them back to Hell for all eternity.

Priced at 560MSP, $6.99, €5.49, £4.39, Nightmare in North Point will be available from today on PlayStation Network, Xbox LIVE Marketplace and Steam. You can download the official launch trailer and screens from here. You can find out more from www.sleepingdogs.net, our extensive

In life, Big Scar Wu was one of Hong Kong’s most ruthless triad gangsters. Feared as much by those who stood against him as those who stood by him in the Sun On Yee, it was decided by the Dragon Head that he must be stopped. Looking to send a message, they had him stabbed 42 times
before feeding his bleeding corpse to the grinder at the Smiley Cat cat food plant… his final resting place, in the food bowls of the city’s pet cats. It is said that if the wronged receive anything less than a proper burial, their spirit will almost certainly come back as a Hungry Ghost, damned to starve
in the afterlife, feeding only on their hatred. You turn him into cat food and that’s pretty much guaranteed.

Now, Hell has a sense of humour, and when Big Scar Wu arrived in the underworld and word spread of his demise, they renamed him Smiley Cat, much to his chagrin, with the name fuelling his bitterness with every utterance and driving his thirst for revenge. Rising from Hell and vowing to exact
his revenge, Smiley Cat has raised an army of Jiang Shi, vowing to destroy the Sun On Yee and to create Hong Kong’s most fearsome criminal empire.

With the city in chaos and its citizens possessed, Wei Shen now faces a challenge far more sinister than any before. To save Hong Kong, he must seek out the most powerful of Chinese magic, endowing him with a power strong enough to take on Smiley Cat’s army of Jiang Shi and face-off against
the ghosts of Triads he has defeated in the past, sending the dead back to Hell once and for all.

Sleeping Dogs SWAT Pack and Screen Legends packs out now!

Available now are two new add-on packs for Sleeping Dogs from Square Enix London Studios and United Front Games: the police mission-packed SWAT pack and the must-have Screen Legends pack.

SWAT Pack    Patrol the streets of Hong Kong in an armored SWAT van and respond to multiple emergency situations across Hong Kong across 20 action-heavy mini missions. Kit yourself out in a full-bodied SWAT outfit to conceal your identity and withstand twice as much damage.
Plow into fugitive vehicles with the armored SWAT van then use it for cover as you take down armed robbers, drug runners, smugglers, and even resolve hostage situations

Screen Legends Pack   The Lightning Warrior outfit comes complete with a striking look and your own everlasting sword, always available in your apartments. The unique Wing Chun Master outfit improves your melee counter strikes and commands respect throughout the city

The SWAT Pack (320MSP, $3.99, €2.99, £2.39) and the Screen Legends Pack (160MSP, $1.99 / €1.49 / £1.19) are available to download now from Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Network and Steam.

one of the most intuitive and imaginative combat systems, Sleeping Dogs empowers players to perform an extensive set of martial arts moves, singlehandedly taking on numerous opponents. Players perform bone-crunching kicks and combos, vicious counters and a cinematic set of environmental
takedowns making use of countless real-world items from circular saws to phone booths, incinerators to refrigerator doors.

SLEEPING DOGS   Square-Enix + Steam

This is an adventure story told arcade style with you right in the thick of it. As Wei Shen, an American Cop of Chinese orientation, you are chosen to go undercover in one of the major Triad gangs. The game creates an exciting atmosphere akin to almost every cop-crook movie set in (or around)
Chinatown with Jackie Chan, Jet Li style combat moves and action.  The story is mission driven, each task helping you to adjust to the controls, but the game play itself is open ended so you can enjoy the missions at your leisure if you want. At some point you will have to follow the order of the
tasks as this is the only way to go forward in your main quest but in the meantime you can find some action of your own - rather like GTA and the recent Batman Gotham City games.

A mini map directs you to your next mark as does the arrow and distance number that pops up onscreen - though the arrow often is misleading as it is only a compass point, you still need to find the route. Routes are often up and down steps, climbing up and over walls and gates and kicking your
way through doors, all the while brushing rudely past or bumping into passers-by.  Movement is by using the WASD keys to walk with the addition of the [Space Bar] for running and jumping. This can get a bit confusing as play heats up. The Space Bar allows you to run but as you approach an
obstacle you need to tap it to jump and then keep it held, to continue to run after the jump - you can also slide across tables etc using this method.

The animation and character detail is virtually lifelike, with the Triad bosses looking mean and inscrutable as they always do in these movie types; yes all the characters from bosses to henchmen are stereotypes.

Many of the battles you will face are you against numerous opponents. As an adversary moves in to attack he is outlined in red, this is your cue to press the right mouse button. Sometimes this action allows you to go into a predetermined defence mechanic, other times the adversary is quicker than
your button pressing. After fights you need to buy some food and/or drink to get your health and strength back up.  There are several moves you can learn as you go, like in some of the martial arts side-scrolling adventures, but it is still up to you to put what you learn into practise. After several
missions you will have learned the majority of the actions including how to get hold of and drive a variety of vehicles.

SLEEPING DOGS has been a long time coming, originally being slated to be the third in the True Crime series a couple of years back. Square-Enix took over from Activision as the lead publishers and their experience and expertise have turned it away from being an also-ran sequel into a full-on
exciting all-action game. It has been more than well worth waiting for.  It’s fast, furious, contains adult language and adult (violent) scenes, and promises an adrenaline rush every time you return to your saved game.  It’s time to announce that the new GTA has arrived in town.
