UBISOFT have turned the volume on electronic music games way up past eleven with ROCKSMITH.

Now you can plug in your own electric guitar (Bass or Lead) and jam with the very best, opening up new possibilities each time you hit the target score of correct notes played. These possibilities include new amplifiers and settings so that as you progress, your equipment, I won’t say gets better, gives you more sound options.

The basic Xbox 360 game comes with the dvd and a lead that allows you to plug your guitar into your Xbox - there are 2 connections available through  the use of an adaptor (a round plug and a USB).  After the opening on screen credits you are into the tutorial and playing your first song using single notes only.

There are very few similarities with games like Guitar Hero the main ones being that the music comes down the screen towards you and the notes are shown as colours. With Rocksmith each string is given a colour and shown onscreen as a fretboard facing you so you can see the strings each a different colour (low E is Red for example). The music starts playing and slowly at first a portrait shaped box in the string colour comes towards you. As it approaches the box turns from Portrait to Landscape and when it reaches the string you pluck that string at the fret number shown.

After you have hit the correct string a few times (ie played a few notes) the game speeds up and the notes come at you faster. Then without warning you get thrown a curveball as not only is the game now faster it also starts adding new notes 9as in different strings) and then just as you start to feel comfortable the fret number also changes.

The song ends and you are awarded points according to how well you have done. Then you can play again or continue on to the next lesson and song. After just a few minutes you have played 2 songs and are ready for your first live performance. At this point I had played a song I knew (Satisfaction by the Stones) and a song I liked but didn't know (Next Girl by the Black Keys) but had practised a couple of times by replaying it until I was okay with it.

Then I was surprised by having to play Angela - Jarvis Cocker - as an encore and I made a complete mess of it. The boos of the small but vociferous crowd made me realise I needed more practise. Knowing where each fret is helps a lot. There are some stickers to put on your guitar for this but no-one in their right mind is going to put fret number stickers on a real guitar.

There are a couple of things to note. First off there is very little documentation with the game and the onscreen tutorial seems  to be running a little behind what you are asked to do. Secondly, after virtually every song you have to prove that your guitar is in tune by playing the strings in order.

Onwards and upwards in speed and volume the game continues to have you playing chords as well as notes until you can do runs, slides, pull offs and hammer-ons at will, and of course give full believable concerts.

The list of songs is fantastic. There are 51 plus a few you can open during play and others you can get through various other means. I don’t have enough room on this page (will have on the website) to list all the songs so I’ll name but a few, along with the artists just to give you a taste:-

House of the Rising Sun - the Animals

Sunshine of your Love - Cream

Boys Don’t Cry - The Cure

Run Back to your Side - Eric Clapton

Rebel Rebel - David Bowie

Use Somebody - Kings of Leon

Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd

There are Technique Challenges where you can try out all manner of playing different notes and chords etc, all the practise options you could ask for. There are 12 challenges on sustains, chords, barre chords, finger picking etc. Also within Rocksmith there are games to help you improve your skills. Ducks and Super-Ducks teach fret work, Scale Runner - helps with scales , Quick Pick dash - for tremolo technique.

The Riff Repeater option breaks songs into different components - Verses and Solos etc. There is also a free-play option where you can use the game as an amplifier for your guitar.

Saying Rocksmith is unique isn’t enough. It is brilliant! I have been learning to play the guitar for a while now and my friends have been excellent with their teaching - especially the Wookiee. This game is superb for me as it covers 2 of my favourite past-times in a different way - I get to play games at the same time as I am learning.
