PALLADIUM BOOKS presents ROBOTECH: the GENESIS PITS Sourcebook - A sourcebook of 112 pages for the Robotech rpg written by Irvin Jackson
The GENESIS PITS are a GM aid that can be used in almost any scenario or adventure within the Robotech rpg. They were created and designed by the Invid and can be of any shape or size, though the ones found deep underground on Earth are all roughly the same having been built by the Invid Regess – many on other planets were designed by or built by the Invid Regent.
These pits are places where the Invid can be created in different forms or other random monsters can be brought in to give the players something else to think about, especially if they are on a planet where there is only one or perhaps two life-forms.
The Genesis Pits were originally a type of Holy Place, or a place of peace where the Invid could receive blessings from the Flower of Life. Then along came the invasion by the Robotech Masters and the Invid world was literally torn apart, ripped, broken and beaten. The Invid mentality changed forever. The Pits are now like massive laboratories where the Regent's forces can create advanced technology as well as transform people or natives of the planet through genetic reconstruction and research into order following killer mutants. The Invid are no longer peaceful, they have become what is necessary for survival. The Genesis Pits create different mutant types depending where they are situated, such as the Tirolian Clones and the Black Bioroids
This book is supposedly of little use to other settings within the Megaverse, though I am pretty sure the information in it can easily be transformed by an enterprising GM to suit where required. In general, like most specific sourcebooks, Genesis Pits is at its best when used in a Robotech environment but as there are in this setting already Genesis Pits on Earth, created by the Regess, then there is no reason why, with a generic environment like RIFTS, the connection cannot be made. On Earth the pits have caused accidental and deliberate mutations of animals and not all mutations are complete. There are many cases of partial mutation in both animals and humans and these alone can be the germ of a new adventure.
Role-players in general, or should I say GMs in general, love tables and charts that allow them to roll dice or just select from the lists to augment their adventures or give their imaginations a quick boost. In here, for example, you will find tables for creating Genesis Pit NPCs or PCs of many and varied kinds. The fun you can have with just these few pages is worth the cost of the book alone, and that's before you let loose on your players. You can also include unexpected surprises (I suppose that's the same thing as if it's a surprise you wouldn't expect it, just shows my current need for coffee, anyway back to the plot...) such as having your player's characters locate a genesis Pit on another planet only to find it is a breeding ground for Earth-like dinosaurs or other creatures totally alien to the planet they are on.
Robotech: Genesis Pits is a volume of massive expansion possibilities. To coin an old phrase, it is only limited by the imagination of the user.
If you are not an enterprising GM or if you only play Robotech rpg then you will need the Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles rules book. I know because it says so on the back of the cover.
