INJUSTICE GODS AMONG US: GAMES GAZETTE REVIEW:

I had read all the hype and press releases about INJUSTICE:GODS AMONG US but in truth wasn't prepared for either the gameplay (based on the Unreal engine) or the sheer beauty and fun of taking control of the best characters DC have to offer.

There are a few ways of playing - Battle Mode, Versus Mode, Training Mode, S.T.A.R. LABS and story mode - so I went for the tutorial first as I wanted to get acquainted with the controls. As it was I went through the first 3-4 mini tutorials and then went on to the Story mode. This is the crux of the game and so well written that large pieces of time will disappear in fleeting moments; you will get so involved in the action and the story behind it that only comes with addictive games.

The Screenshots below were found on the internet using Google Images.

The characters in this game are super, super-heroes and villains. They are not the namby-pamby cartoon style characters in bright stylish colours, they are fully detailed and extremely muscular, as you would expect a heroe to be like. Wonder Woman, Diana Prince, came from a tribe of Amazon women and in the TV series she looked sexy yet fragile. Here in INJUSTICE she looks Amazonian; large, muscular and focused.   The story mode unfolds in chapters, each putting you in control of a different character.  There is a wealth of voice talent in this game. Many of the vocal artists have voiced characters in top popular TV animated shows and in non-animated series. As examples I can give you Stephen Amell as Arrow (he is currently playing Arrow in the TV series), Adam Baldwin voices Green and Yellow Lantern, Kevin Conroy is Batman (for the umpteenth plus time), the superb actor (and nearly always a bad guy) gives quality vocals to The Flash and Nightwing (II) and the excellent Alan Tudyk (well loved in "Firefly") is Green Arrow.

The base of the story is that Metropolis has been virtually devastated by Superman after the Joker tricked him into killing his wife, Lois Lane and their unborn child. Superman went super-mental and killed the Joker. Superman then created a New World Order with many super-heroes joining with him to rule what is left of Metropolis. Batman forms an Insurgency of other heroes and a huge battle ensues between the two factions. The powers unleashed during this war uncover the alternate Universe of the Justice League and some of the characters get whisked through a portal to this new world. Here Metropolis hasn't been devatstaed, the Joker lives and Lex Luthor is a good guy. However, many of the alternate super-heroes are now super-villains and not surprisingly some of the super-villains are now heroes.

Batman is your first good hero and he is soon in combat with the Joker, Bane and Lex Luthor. Then Green Lantern fights Yellow Lantern as well as Sinestro, Raven and Cyborg, Aquaman combats Flash, Shazam, Ares and Aquaman. Green Arrow has to defeat the huge golem, Grundy, the fast and evil Killer Frost and WonderWoman. Juast in case you think all you control are hero heroes you also get to fight Batman, Harley Quinn, Hawk Girl and Nightwing using the Joker and his box of tricks.

As for the gameplay it is a clever mix of 3D characters in a 2D scrolling environment with additional 3D pieces that can be thrown, pushed, smashed and activated in many ways. The combat takes place on a sideways (forwards and backwards) scrolling background straight from the pages of the DC comic world. Movement is via the 4-way switch and combat is via the 4 buttons; X = Light attack, Y = Medium strength attack, A = Hard attack. These can be combined with B and together for the characters special attacks - each character having a specialised special attack.

The S.T.A.R. LABS mode has the players taking on missions and attempting to get 3 stars in each special mission.
The BATTLES mode has 3 chapters:
Classic Heroes: which is for Heroes only. You get to choose the level of difficulty and have to fight several Villains
Classic Villains: which is for Villains only. - You get to choose the level of difficulty and have to fight several Heroes.
Poisoned:  Poison is in your heroes body and you are in a timed mission, complete or die !
Survivor Mode: There are around 15 more missions each linked, sort of. Your Health carries over from Mission to Mission.

In combat has the character has to win each battle twice - Heroes and Villains have two Health bars. If you win you move onto the next fight or next Chapter. If you lose you get to fight the same combat again, but only the opponent you just lost to not any that you had previously beaten. The toughest contests are those against your alternate self. There are slight differences in appearance between the "twin" adversaries plus there are different powers and weapons available, but the characters are perfectly balanced and this makes for some finger-popping action as you don't have more than a fleeting second to act or react (you can attempt to block opponent's blows).

I am thoroughly struck by this excellent game. If you are a DC Heroes fan then there is little chance that you will not enjoy this. It is really weird fighting as a super-hero in one battle and then controlling a super-villain and wanting them to win against a super-hero, so unusual.

There are numerous downloads available for the XBox version (I assume the same also for the PS3) most of which cost 400 Microsoft points each, though there is a Combat pack #1 which is a free download.  Teen Titan skins, Bad Girls skins, LOBO, Injustice Season Pass and Flashpoint skin pack being some of the available additions.
