The Ilme are a strange race of mere-dragons, among the most unique and mysterious of the intelligent races on Hârn. The Ilme have an ancient culture with a complex language and a deep mythology. They bear some likeness to their great dragon cousins, and many a reported tale of dragonkind was almost certainly really an Ilme encounter, but there are significant differences. Although they are reptilian, the Ilme have no wings and probably could not fly even if they had; they commonly attain a height of 12 feet and a weight of two tons. The two sexes live apart except when mating. Despite their undisputed strength, male Ilme are somewhat cowardly and are frequently bullied and robbed by local Gargun (orc) bands. Theyprefer to hunt from ambush or eat carrion. They will rarely attack intruders but will fight with desperation when cornered. Even then, they usually try to negotiate first. Female Ilme are another matter; they will attack and fight intruders with limb-tearing ferocity, especially to protect their young. The Order of the Red Shadows of Herpa is a religious fighting order devoted to Agrik, the dark god of war and violence. Righteous war and devotion to Agrik's demonic servants, the V'hir, are the hallmarks of the order, which traces its lineage to the bodyguards of the astrologer-priests of the Corani imperial court. Today they are politically powerful through the sponsorship of the clerics of the Order of Herpa the Mace and rich from the mineral wealth of their lands at Menekai. To most peasants, they personify all that is to be feared in Agrikans: easy rage and domination of the weak. To certain factions of Rethem's nobility, they represent the virtues of an Agrikan knight: fearlessness, dogged pursuit of victory, loyalty to those who earn it, and a firm belief that might is granted to those who deserve and use it. Although called to holy war against the Kubora of Peran, they also seek to avenge a recent betrayal that stains their honor.
