HAWKEN - review of Open Beta

This is a first person all action game in which you control one of several mechanized warrior types and view the screen (see below) through the windscreen of the vehicle. The effect when played on my 28 inch widescreen monitor is reminiscent of watching a full-on action dvd movie and being part of the film.  The problem with the windscreen view is that it is like wearing blinkers, you have no peripheral vision. Therefore you get shot at from the side and have to turn, sort of like the way you would if you had a stiff neck, a shoulder rather than neck turn.  Movement is via the WASD keys and fire combat utilizes the left, right and centre mouse buttons.

The game is free to play but in a way that’s a misnomer. You are given one mech and some equipment - you do get to name your mech (I called mine DA 1 SY) - and if you play for umpteen hours and then some you may eventually earn enough in-game cash to buy a second mech. The likelihood when playing though is that you will either get fed up being defeated by stronger better mechs which other players have bought or you will begin to spend real money on new mechs and upgraded weapons and armour. Then the free part disappears and you end up paying to play.

I don’t know what will be in the final release but in the Open Beta there are four possible games. When you select one you wait for enough online players to join, and then you begin.

DeathMatch: You vs A N Other Mech.

Team DeathMatch: Team v Team. 4 players in each team. You join a game and are assigned to a team.

Missile Assault: You have to defend your team’s Silo’s and capture those of your opponent.

Siege: Collect energy to launch your attack on the enemy base.

As you can see there is nothing there that you haven’t played before, therefore there must be something to make you want to play HAWKEN, and there is, the excellent reality of the terrain.
