CCP Launches “True Stories from the First Decade” of the EVE Universe

Player stories take center stage in celebration of EVE Online’s tenth year

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND—April 3, 2013—CCP Games, the world’s leading independent massively multiplayer game developer, today launched True Stories from the First Decade ( effort that aims to discover, gather and then feature the greatest player stories from EVE Online®’s famously rich sci-fi game universe by soliciting them directly from the players themselves. It is an integral part of a year-long tenth-anniversary celebration with peaks at the April 25-27 EVE Fanfest, EVE’s 10th anniversary celebration on May 6th and the EVE Online: Odyssey expansion on June 4th (

The True Stories website accepts player anecdotes from all active EVE subscribers and relies on an open story debate and a participatory voting system to bring the most vivid and popular stories to the forefront. All submissions will be preserved as part of the history of EVE, and some will be used as inspiration for future transmedia projects such as books, comics, TV and film initiatives set within the EVE Universe and developed by CCP and its partners.

From the years of persistent history of spaceship warfare in EVE Online to the newly added mercenary battles of DUST 514®, the players of the EVE Universe are placed at the center of the “sandbox” game design and single game server, with human interaction driving conflict and cooperation.

The games have few limits set on how players turn their imagination into action and have produced some of the most consistently interesting stories in gaming over the years, from massive investment betrayals to spontaneous thousand-person fleet battles and from  carefully orchestrated assassinations to month long wars ending with expert diplomatic maneuvers.

“Our players have entertained EVE’s followers for ten strong years, coming up with the most unique, inventive ideas and then acting them out amongst the stars,” said Torfi Frans Olafsson, Creative Director of the EVE Universe Intellectual Property Group. “They are the backbone of this game universe and we are proud to celebrate their stories both big and small.”

In true EVE fashion, players can tag characters, corporations, alliances and solar systems in order to add context and permanence to the events they describe, echoing the truths that reputation is of utmost importance in a shared society such as EVE and that each decision a player makes could have consequences ripple well into the future.

The inaugural drive for True Stories will be available for submissions until May 1st, when voting will open. Voting will last for two weeks. After that, the player with the highest-ranked story will receive a trip to Iceland for two, to visit CCP’s headquarters and experience Iceland first hand.

Also in December, EVE Online relaunched in China with new partner Tiancity to bring the same sandbox-style gameplay to a massive new audience where it has been thriving ever since.

In January, CCP’s DUST 514® a free-to-play massively multiplayer online first-person shooter, went into open beta and became available for free download exclusively to PlayStation®3 users worldwide. DUST 514 shares the same, real-time universe as EVE Online and player corporations can coordinate attacks between the two games.  This marked the first time two games from different genres have been linked together into one, massive online experience.

We have not come to this point alone; millions of players have helped push us to this milestone. I now know in my mind what I previously only believed in my heart: that EVE will outlive us all.”

CCP will commemorate EVE Online’s tenth anniversary throughout the year under a unified “Second Decade” theme. The year-long celebration will kick off in late April in Reykjavik, Iceland with the sold-out EVE Fanfest, EVE Online’s annual player festival which will be streamed live online.  EVE’s official tenth birthday follows on May 6th and will mark the official start of the second decade of the EVE Universe.

Throughout the year, CCP will be supporting player gatherings around the world and holding in-game events to further the storyline of the combined universe as it continues to grow.
