My first introduction to the ROCK SCIENCE music trivia game was the Motörhead version and I have to admit I was sceptical about basing a complete rock music quiz on the trivia of and surrounding Motörhead. As regular readers of Games Gazette and Games Gazette Online will know, my scepticism was unwarranted because the game isn't completely about Motörhead it only features trivia on Motörhead, surrounded by all manner of quiz questions on numerous popular (mostly) Heavy Metal music and bands. In essence it is a music quiz where every other answer isn't Elvis Presley, the Beatles or Arrowsmith. (My apologies for the last name but it is an in-joke here. Many years ago on holiday in the USA we bought a "Rock Trivia" game where about 10% of the answers were "Arrowsmith". We thought it hilarious that an American created music game couldn't get the name of one of the most prominent American rock bands correct. But I digress .... )

ROCK SCIENCE certainly does know it's Arrowsmith from its Aerosmith and it's Motörhead from its Metallica. I have never actually followed either of these bands but obviously had heard of them and so although I was getting most answers concerning these and a lot of the other well known/famous heavy metal/rock bands incorrect I was also learning a lot more about these groups. Surprisingly, I was also learning a lot more about groups that I thought I already knew a lot about. I should quickly mention here that the Beatles, Toto, the Ramones, Rolling Stones, ZZ Top and even Queen are all possible answers, which should give you an idea of the scope of musical genres and sounds that the game's creators have considered for what at first looks like it is going to be way out of many music fans realm of sounds.

Rock Science Games can be found on the Internet for around $40.00 each

Some of the questions have easily guessed answers, such as "What was the Flight number of Iron Maiden's tour plane in 2008?" Even if you know nothing about Iron Maiden or Flight numbers from the four possible answers to choose from; 5150, 911, 666, 777, there's only one that reallt stands out as a possibility, so you can see that Rock Science trivia games are for anyone who likes Rock, Pop, Heavy and/or Metal (or any combo of these) basically anyone who likes music from the sixties onwards. The DRUM version even goes a little backwards with answers that include Art Blakey, Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, though to be honest what trivia quiz based on famous drummers could even think of omitting such luminaries as Krupa and Rich ?

There are 100 Question cards which are split into two specific sets identified by the Q & A text atop each card; one set is Gold on White and the other 50 cards have Gold on Red text. If you just look at the Question side of each set of cards they look pretty much the same except for the background colour under the "Q". The differences are in the type of question being asked as you will immediately notice by flipping the cards over and seeing how the Answers are set out. The Gold on White Qs have answer sections labelled: ROCKER, 50/50 and SEX DRUGS & RnR whereas the Gold on Red cards answers fit into the categories: SONG, ALBUM and ROCK the SONG.

The Gold/White cards have THREE questions per section while the Gold/Red cards have two sections of Three questions and one section "Rock the Song" which is a special section. The player whose turn it is selects one of the two songs mentioned and then has to portray it to the other players, charades style, but being able to drum, hum and dance along with mime for the others to guess the title. Singing isn't allowed (neither is speaking the lyrics) but virtually every other means of non-verbal communication is acceptable. The good thing is that if you cannot hum the song because you simply have never heard it and have no idea how it goes you can mime the words (as in Charades).

Personally I think that because of the titles given to the Rock Science trivia games, Motörhead, Drum Channel etc a lot of music fans will be put off because these names give the impression that there is nothing in the game that will interest them. This is probably correct if you are a Country music or pure Pop music fan, Garth Brooks and Britney Spears aren't liable to pop up as options in the answers, but if you enjoy music with a buzz, where electric guitars rule, and where the lyrics don't mellow about Yellow Ribbons and Old Oak Trees any one of the ROCK SCIENCE basic games will give you many sessions of tub-thumping, brain-searching, memory-jogging entertainment. Music is meant to entertain Rock Science trivia does. Going back to players being put off because of the game titles, I also believe that because of those titles the game will bring people to the table who would normally pooh-pooh the idea of sitting around playing a trivia game. So it's Win-Lose, Lose-Win for some and a Win-Win situation for others.

ROCK SCIENCE trivia games offer a good opportunity to have friends round, crack a few tinnies, catch some sounds and expand your musical knowledge.

The player's pieces are actual, usable Guitar Picks (even in the Drum version - should I have expected Drumsticks or Mini TomToms ?)
