Albion Online - Overhaul of Consumables and Potions systems

With 11 days left until the Closed Beta launch of the upcoming cross-platform sandbox MMORPG Albion Online, developers Sandbox Interactive announced another exciting system update. Good news for potion-brewers, farmers and cooks - the consumables and potions systems received an overhaul bringing more variety into the whole food making and alchemy processes.

For more information on the overhaul of Consumables and Potions systems read the developer blog post here: https://albiononline.com/en/news/consumables-overhaul

With Albion’s highly player-driven economy, food and potions play a remarkably important role in sustaining player’s territories, crafting stations and enhancing various character’s skills. When consuming certain meals, characters gain buffs for a certain period of time such as health regeneration outside of combat, increased crafting speed, and bonus combat damage. Potions, on the other hand, give a character instant but stronger benefits like a short heal over time effect, short energy boost, strong increase in defence values and others.

For the alchemy masters, life becomes easier as Albion provides an all-new herb garden where players will be able to grow their own herbs, which afterwards can be brewed into one of seven different helpful potions.

Map Creation in Cross-Platform Sandbox MMORPG Albion Online

With the closed beta of Sandbox Box Interactive’s medieval sandbox MMO Albion Online scheduled to kick-off this November, the development team has released an insightful blog, covering the intricacies of map design for its ambitious cross-platform (PC, Mac, iOS and Android) online universe.

Level design is at the very core of the Albion Online experience. In the latest blog How a Map for Albion Online is Designed, by Sandbox’s level design team, they discuss the process required to achieve three goals of level design: balancing, entertainment and visuals.

Albion Online - The Labourers

With less than three weeks left before the Closed Beta of the cross-platform sandbox MMORPG Albion Online, Sandbox Interactive shares a new video showcasing one of the latests features in the game - hirable resource gatherers called “Labourers”:

Along with the video, the developer has published a blog post explaining the Labourers system in more depth.

Since nearly everything that players build or craft requires some kind of resource, the gathering process plays a crucial role in Albion’s heavily player-driven economy. The newly introduced non player characters, Labourers, not only help players with resource collection, they bring a purpose to the whole housing concept.

There are a few types of Labourers including gatherers, crafters and a mercenary available to choose from according to one’s playstyle. After settling labourers in either a house or a guild hall, players acquire from them a profession-related journal in order to fill it in with notes for labourers to follow while performing their tasks. The more tasks labourers finish, the more proficient they become, which in turn means they become more demanding. In order to keep them content, players need to provide them with appropriate furniture and house decorations. Afterall, a happy labourer is a productive one!

More information on the new Labourer feature in Albion Online can be found here: https://www.albiononline.com/en/news/albion-online-labourers

The process begins with a rough sketch created according to several design rules outlined in a requirement sheet. The next step is to build a map template into Unity, where the level design team sketch the terrain, hills, lakes and important landmarks to get a decent visual representation. Once the rough map is imported, it then undergoes several stages of design, from marking the positions of key landmarks to creating height differences and making the map feel “alive”.

With all details in place, the map is then exported to a 2D display “world editor” where it is connected with other Albion maps. Afterwards, it is imported into one of the development builds for further testing and balancing. For a small map, it takes the design team 35 hours from turning a rough paper sketch into a fully realized world in the Albion Online universe. Albion Online’s maps go through vigorous testing, so they are as detailed and balanced as possible, which is imperative for a well-designed game map.

Albion Online Introduces Upgradable Islands

In preparation for the closed beta of the first true cross-platform sandbox MMORPG Albion Online this November, developer Sandbox Interactive continues to bring good news to the fans of the Albion Universe - one of the most unique features, Albion’s system of Private Islands, receives a highly anticipated ‘upgrade’. After listening to community requests to expand upon the idea, the developers decided to improve the player experience by introducing different island levels with additional building and farming plots, as well as a broader variety of decorative options so that players can customize the environment.

In the major cities, players can purchase Private Islands as a hideaway place, where they can build houses and workshops, even decorate and farm. With the new system, the number of farming and building plots can now be increased with an investment of Silver. The upgrade clears off the rubble and any other obstructions allowing to expand the area which offers numerous opportunities on improving player’s own little private haven. A total of five levels of Private Islands is in the works, each providing different customization options for the player to make these habitats truly unique.

In addition, the closed beta for Albion Online starting in November will bring a new system of hirable non-player characters for resource collection - Laborers. A more detailed introduction to the Laborers system will follow at a later date.

Land Auction System Uncovered in Sandbox MMORPG Albion Online

Sandbox Interactive, the developer of the cross-platform sandbox MMORPG Albion Online, is preparing for the upcoming Closed Beta this November by adding new features and modifying the existing ones in order to offer the Albion community the best possible experience. Their most recent blog post The Land Auction System introduces the new land auction system which replaces the previous upkeep payment, and explains how the changes will make the whole land ownership process more engaging.

The land auction starts one week before the end of any lease applying a maximum bid system: players enter the maximum amount of silver they are willing to spend on a plot. Even though the bids of current plot owners count double, it is possible for other players to increase their bid in the first six days of the auction. On the seventh day, only the current owner of a plot is allowed to increase the bid to prevent them from being „sniped“ at the last second. By winning the auction, current owners will be granted a land lease extension of four or eight weeks. If the current owner is outbid, the plot ownership changes with the previous owner getting a percentage of the winning bid as a compensation.

The goal of the auction system is to prevent a constant blockade of building plots and to give novice players joining Albion Online a fair chance at owning a desirable building space. Theoretically, now players can purchase any plot – as long as they are able to outbid the previous owner, encouraging a more fluid market and also bringing some additional „economic PvP“ into the game.
