Hello, and welcome to Counter Culture Games! Our aim is simple – to bring people and games together.Board games and card games have changed a lot over the last 20 years, and up and down the country thousands of people are rediscovering the joys of tabletop gaming.

Let us help you become one of them!

No, not like Monopoly

If you think that board games are about arguing over Monopoly or studying complicated Chess openings, we have great news for you; there’s so much more to modern games.
There are games for everyone – adults, families, children, small groups, large groups, two people, chatty people, quiet people, deep strategic thinkers and people who just want a laugh with their friends.
There are long games, quick games, huge games that sprawl across the table, small games you can take on holiday, games you can play in teams, games you can play as one team, games for any situation!

About Us

We are Jim and Beth Crozier, and we recently discovered the wonderful world of modern board and card games. We were astounded to learn just how many games there are available, and how good they are.
We were convinced that there are a huge number of people who would love to play these games if only they knew about them. So we tried them out on our friends, and they agreed!
With their support we decided that someone needed to bring people and games together, and it might as well be us. Counter Culture Games was born!

We are based in Chelmsford, Essex, and we are booking events around the county. Our ultimate aim is to open a games cafe in the Chelmsford area to create a community space for people to gather, make new friends and play lots of games!

A Beginner’s Guide to Modern Board Games

So you’ve heard about the hobby of board gaming – maybe a friend mentioned that they go to a local gaming group, or you read something in the Sunday supplement about the growth of the board game industry. You’ve decided you want to know a bit more about it, but you’re not sure where to start.

If your experience of board games is limited to Monopoly, Cluedo and Risk, then there’s a lot to learn. There are 1000’s of games available, and there are new ones being published every week. It can be quite bewildering at first, so we’ve prepared this short guide for beginning gamers.

We’re going to introduce you to some games that we call Gateway Games. These are the games that we think are the best place to start, either because they’re easy to learn, or they’re great examples of how modern board games are very different from the ones you remember. These are the games that introduce new concepts, like modular boards, end game scoring, or co-operation. Try these out (possibly at one of our events) to see if you like them, and if you do, then there is a whole world of gaming waiting for you.
