The 2018 UK Games Expo was on 1st to 3rd June. It was by far the largest yet iteration of the event. The organizers can announce around 21,700 came to the show. Turnstile/Attendance was over 39,000. Exhibitors, attendance and floor space all grew by about 30% compared to the 2017 show.
In all, almost 30,000 sqm of space was used between the NEC, the Hilton Hotel, smaller rooms and suites and the outdoor areas.
UKGE 2018 could swallow the first 8 and a half Expos. If you add together the unique attendees, or add up the space used - in both cases this show is the same as all the 6 Clarendon Suite Expos and most of the 3 Hilton only Expos added together. This is an indication of the massive growth since the move to the NEC.
375+ exhibitors participated. The event attracted both huge international companies with stands of 300 sqm as well as scores of indie designers and publishers at their first convention. The show features a strong element of Industry Networking as well as Publisher-Designer events and heavily encourages new and up and coming exhibitors.
The heart of the show is the enthusiast who attended in vast numbers and engaged with hundreds of games demonstrated accross the event. Alongside this was a massive organised play schedule with national and international level tournaments in boardgames, cardgames and miniatures - some events hitting 500 entrants as well as a varied and comprehensive roleplaying schedule.
For the family attendees there were many attractions including a massive Family Zone of games to play with the family, a Viking and orc encampent with displays of fighting and stories from mythology, facepainting and an array of costumed characters from TV and movie to engage with.
UK Games Expo 2019 will be held in the NEC and Hilton Hotel on 31st May to 2nd June. The organisers hope to see you there.
UK Games Expo Awards.
At UK Games Expo the UKGE awards for best games were presented.
Games accepted into the awards must have never been entered before. They generally must have been published in the 12 months before UKGE although if was published before June 2017 then they would have still been accepted (at the Judges' discretion) if they did not get entered in the original publication year for a variety of reasons. One or two games you will see below fall into that group.
Firstly all games were rated by a panel of judges chosen by UK Games Expo. The short lists were selected according to the judge's ratings and were published on 15th May 2018.
One of these 3 games was chosen by the Judges as the Judges' Award winner.
All games in the shortlist were then eligible for a public vote using the show app to choose the Peoples Choice Award winner. So visitors to the show chose their favourite game out of the shortlisted ones.
