Playable with a Keyboard using mainly WASD (not the Arrow keys) along with the [Spacebar] and [Return] keys or if you have a PC compatible gamepad (I have a Thrustmaster Dual Analog 3) this is an action game in the genre of Streetfighter ™  and Dragon Ball Fighter Z ™ and the like.

You can play solo against the CPU, online against opposition or as two players sitting alongside each other. However you play the action is wonderfully choreographed with smash-in-your-face colourful animations, mostly depicting the wide-eyed manga style girls that home PCs have introduced to hundreds of thousands of players. So many people never heard of or had seen manga style characters until they became popular on internet and console fighting games.

You can practise your moves either in the Training or the Mission Training options. One allows you to learn the separate moves you can make and how to turn them into powerful combos and the other lets you learn as you play by giving you specific goals - which the game calls 'Missions'. One of the things I really like about Granblue Fantasy is that it utilises the majority, if not all, of the controller's buttons, triggers, 4-way pad and sticks. It is not a game where you continually click one key or button and wait for success, you have to work for it, and that means you have to play the game, you cannot just go through the motions - the opponent hits back, and hard, so you have to out-think as well as out-fight them.

I haven't role-played a game in the D&D™ style genre for a fair while now but in my mind I still understand what an RPG (Role-Playing Game) is, and games such as GranBlue Fantasy are not anything like RPGs despite them being listed as Action/Adventure/RPG games. My understanding on why they call these style of games RPGs is that they (designers/publishers) have the animé fans already and want to break into the mass role-playing market. I must admit that it frustrates me to call this genre of game role-playing because it isn't. There are many games, most MMOs, that come close to role-playing but what has to be remembered is that role-playing is in the mind of the players sitting round the table; those thoughts cannot be built into a game, no matter how good its A.I. is.

As you can see from above this isn't an inexpensive game, in fact compared to many other games of this ilk it is quite expensive, but as they say about multi-million-$dollar movies, the cost is all up there on the screen in front of you. The artwork and animation is pure fantasy animé, close to naughty but nearer to nice. It isn't hardcore so it doesn't need an 'Adult' certification.

If you visit the Steam Power website for this game there are some official screenshots (the one's on this page are from my PC) and a short video of and about play. Click here to be taken there.

The game is viewed in what has been called 2.5D, not flat 2D and not quite 3D, it certainly is right up there with the best visuals for this type of combat game. The backgrounds aren't interactive but they are beautifully designed matte shots as often found in movies. The speed of the animation is amazing as are the combined combat actions. The in-air twists and turns, coming down with a swooping strike, the leg sliding with the sword sweeping afore you, these have all been seen before but perhaps not in such definition and style or with such panache. Basically, I am saying that this is a fun combat game, enjoyable for all who like anime and fighting games.

Granblue Fantasy has soared into the hearts of millions since its release as a browser game for smartphones in 2014, and will celebrate its sixth birthday in March 2020. Featuring Cygames' high-quality art, captivating sound design, and an ever-expanding game system, Granblue Fantasy has continued to charm its fans throughout the years.

Now Cygames has partnered with Arc System Works, known for such popular fighting franchises as GUILTY GEAR and BlazBlue, to bring Granblue Fantasy to the world of fighting games, complete with top-notch game design and one-of-a-kind 3D graphics.
